With the AWS free tier, they have changed things over the last couple of years.I think new user should start with Free Tier. You can use AWS for free for upto 6 months. You can get $100 free credits for just signing up. As you explore other services, you can also get $100 additional credits. I think in 6 months you would be able to determine whether AWS is for you or not.
As you are coming from the VPS world, think about it as your first month free to ensure that the offering is what you are used to.As a beginner, when there's a free version of the service available, it's in your best interest to start with it. With AWS, they offer such with their free tier. It's best to start from there and see how far and well it does before deciding to use the pain plan.

I wouldn't blame you at all because you always get a better deal with using premium AWS services. Money is the only barrier, once that's not a problem, it's what I would choose to do.While I agree with this, I won't mind paying for premium AWS services as long as I get value for the money paid. That is where my focus will be with such a service.
